The deer is a common species, found from mountain forests to the Danube Delta, with an increased density in the area of hills and plains. The vigor of the specimens encountered and the size of the trophies acquired exclusively in the open field, from wild specimens helped with complementary food only during the critical winter period, denotes, as in the case of the deer, a genetic background of exceptional value.
The national record of 211.67 C.I.C. points, approved in Marseilles in 1977, comes from the south of Romania, from an arid plain area, interrupted in some places by forested ravines.
Trophies over 150 C.I.C. points, are frequently obtained from the area of plateaus and medium hills, located in the south, west and center of the country, as well as in the Danube Meadow and in the islands between its arms.

The height at the withers is between 65–75 cm and the body length can vary between 95 and 135 cm.

In some species, sexual dimorphism is very pronounced: The male is larger than the female and has horns, weighing between 20 and 30 kg.
